Editor (part-time)

As our editor, you’ll play a critical role in helping our talented team finalize, refine, and present their research-driven strategies, content and campaigns. You’ll bring rigorous standards, a flair for writing, and an eye for detail to our work, which ranges from qualitative and quantitative research reports to strategic plans, web copy, white papers, presentations, and client memos.

This position is part-time and can be on-site in our Washington, D.C., office or remote. Hours are flexible and do not have to adhere to a standard weekday schedule. We estimate approximately 20 hours a week, which may increase over time.

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Serve as our in-house editor on all deliverables, including both line editing and copy editing.
  • At Hattaway line editing includes: restructuring to make sure the document flows logically; asking clarifying questions; and requesting additional context. This entails going through a deliverable line-by-line, revising and rewriting where necessary for tone, economy, and accuracy.
  • Copy editing here is defined as: making sure all of our deliverables follow the Hattaway Style Guide; using proper grammar; checking proper nouns and citations for accuracy; and otherwise ensuring that each and every product is error-free.
  • Coach the team on proofreading and the use of our Style Guide, and ensure quality control in our written products.
  • Work well with a variety of team members on multiple projects, while meeting deadlines and maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  • Clearly and confidently discuss input and editorial choices and their impact on final products with team members.
  • Address problems as they arise and be flexible with implementing solutions that serve clients’ needs.
  • Support the firm’s mission and purpose, demonstrating an interest in social 


  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism; communications, English, or a related field; a certificate in editing is a plus, but not required.
  • Five to seven years of experience in editing.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • A commitment to an equitable workplace and the effort it takes to maintain one.
  • Creativity, a sense of humor, and a strong grasp of what makes compelling and actionable content.
  • The desire to grow with a dynamic firm.
