Vice President of Strategy

Hattaway Communications is a Washington, D.C.-based strategic communications firm with a mission: We help visionary leaders and organizations use the power of strategy, science, and storytelling to achieve ambitious goals that benefit people and the planet. Our team works with high-profile, high-impact clients in advocacy, philanthropy, government, and business. We’re in the business of communications for impact, not self-promotion.

As the Vice President of our Strategy group, you’ll build upon the firm’s strong foundation in innovative communications research and development—and bring to life our vision of executing broad-scale, breakthrough campaigns to touch hearts, change minds, and drive action.

We’re looking for someone with the skill, enthusiasm, and commitment to take our firm to the next level.  As our Strategy VP you will:

  • Lead and expand a team of world-class talent with the insight and skills to execute compelling, research-based campaigns.
  • Counsel top-tier clients and win their trust by demonstrating your passion for their causes and robust understanding of their organizations, issues, goals, and challenges.
  • Collaborate with the Science and Storytelling teams to produce actionable insights, innovative strategies, compelling messages, breakthrough creative, and impactful campaigns.
  • Support the firm’s mission and purpose, demonstrating an interest in social
issues and a passion for the power of strategic communications to contribute to social change.
  • Build new relationships for the firm with potential corporate, government, non-profit, and foundation clients.

  • A track record in leading, developing, and executing integrated, results-oriented campaigns for corporate, advocacy, non-profit, government, and/or political organizations. You know how campaigns progress from concept to execution, how to build and engage audiences, how to staff and budget for executional excellence, and how to track metrics and use them to update strategy and adjust tactics. You’ll be able to show how your work has driven measurable results in changing attitudes, driving behaviors, and/or raising revenues.
  • Experience building strong teams, including coaching individual members for career growth, recruiting new members, and sustaining a positive, productive team dynamic. We’re looking for a leader talented people want to work for—tell us why that person is you.
  • Proven skill in using research, data, and insight to achieve meaningful understanding of target audiences, shape strategic thinking, and drive thoughtful tactical execution that engages audiences in new ways.
  • Excellent strategic and creative judgment, and the ability to work productively with creative teams to execute a strategic vision. We want to see how the work you’ve led has helped your clients stand out in their space and achieve their goals.
  • A proven ability to lead complex projects from beginning to end, meeting high quality standards and challenging deadlines.
  • A commitment to an equitable workplace and the effort it takes to maintain one.
  • A commitment to quality and attention to detail.
  • The desire to grow with a dynamic firm, and work with others in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • At least 12-15 years experience in integrated campaigns, including experience at a communications agency.

We believe in passion, rigor, and imagination. Our passion is shown in our commitment to our clients and their causes, and in reaching the fullest potential in everything we do—always striving for the highest quality products and experiences for our clients, rather than just being “good enough.” Our rigor is demonstrated through the thoughtful, deliberate, and disciplined approach in all that we do, delivering on the promise of strategic communications that actually achieve meaningful impact—not just add to the noise. Imagination drives all of our work, because it lies at the heart of our creative problem-solving.

Hattaway Communications is committed to creating an equitable world, and we know that begins with creating an equitable workplace. We know bringing talented, diverse people together—especially women and people of color—sharpens our insights, and helps us better serve our diverse clients. We recognize and value the experiences of minoritized peoples, and prioritize prospective hires whose cultural backgrounds and experiences give them unique perspectives, and who share our goal of creating a workplace and world that promotes creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

We are active listeners, supportive partners, and inclusive leaders. We create space for our employees and our partners to fearlessly speak truth, authentically express themselves, and enjoy meaningful professional growth. We not only allow for difference but celebrate and dutifully defend it.

We value each person’s professional development, and have a budget and support for pursuing those interests. Our offices are located in downtown Washington, D.C., between the Dupont Circle and Farragut North metro stations. We are currently working remotely due to the pandemic and will consider remote applicants for this position. We offer competitive benefits including a flexible work environment and generous paid vacation, sick leave, and long-term medical benefits. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
