Tiara makes the complex simple, helping clients find clear, compelling messages that speak directly to the people they most need to reach. She works with organizations like the Waco Foundation, the U.S. Travel Association, and Health Forward Foundation to shape messages that build trust, reflect real people’s experiences, and move bold ideas forward. 

Tiara earned a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in business and professional writing from Salisbury University. She can often be found watching ’90s cartoons or spending time with her church community.

Eleanore Lee

Associate, Strategy

Ellie uncovers powerful insights that help organizations communicate strategically, authentically, and effectively. With a strong foundation in mixed-methods and participatory research, she designs evaluations that elevate nuanced community perspectives and inform meaningful action for organizations ranging from nonprofits to universities and foundations. 

Ellie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in statistics from Swarthmore College and has a background in social impact and behavioral science consulting. A knitting and puzzle enthusiast, she finds joy in challenges that require both creative thinking and an analytical mindset.

Dorry Levine

Managing Director, Strategy

Dorry shapes campaigns that connect the dots—between big ideas, strategic partners, and creative executions that move the right audiences to act. She partners with coalitions, foundations, and nonprofits—including the Pathways and Workforce Funders Collaborative, UnidosUS, and E Pluribus Unum—to help more people see themselves in a cause and feel inspired to take part in it.

Before joining Hattaway, Dorry built her career in the nonprofit world—working in fast-paced press shops and holding down one-person communications teams. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from American University and a master’s degree in digital communication and nonprofit and corporate communication from Johns Hopkins University. She finds fresh perspective and creative spark on long walks or hikes, with or without her kids in tow.

Casey Campbell-Roth

Senior Associate, Strategy

Casey translates research insights into practical strategies that help clients get their message across clearly and reach the right people. She brings an empathetic lens to her work with clients like the Minnesota Department of Health, the California Endowment, and the University of Chicago.

Casey earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Emerson College and was a communications strategist at Harvard University prior to joining Hattaway. She’s currently discovering the world all over again through the eyes of her one-year old daughter.

Alicia Hargrove

Office Manager

Alicia keeps day-to-day operations running smoothly so that teams can stay focused, collaborate effectively, and deliver their best work to clients. She brings a thoughtful approach to streamlining systems and improving processes that support mission-driven work, particularly in education, philanthropy, and equity-focused initiatives. 

Alicia earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from The University of Texas at Austin, which included teaching abroad in Querétaro, Mexico. She enjoys uncovering the stories people tell about their lives, whether through books, documentaries, or everyday conversations, as they offer valuable lessons and perspective.

Doug Hattaway

President

Doug is passionate about adapting insights from the social sciences to enhance the power of strategic communications. He helps clients think big and plan to win—drawing on three decades of experience with high-profile leaders in politics and government, global nonprofits, cutting-edge businesses, and the world’s largest foundations. 

He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a master's degree in English from Florida State University. He enjoys adventure travel with his two awesome sons, along with open-water swimming, hiking, and generally hanging around outdoors.

Molly Jo Molloy

Associate, Strategy

Molly Jo draws on experience evaluating what makes campaigns impactful to create strategies that achieve real results. She bridges knowledge about every phase of a campaign —from media planning to measurement—to ensure her clients’ campaigns achieve meaningful and measurable outcomes. 

Molly Jo graduated Northwestern University with a double major in economics and American political history, as well as a certificate in integrated marketing communications from the Medill School of Journalism. Before joining the Hattaway team, she worked at the Ad Council. Outside the office, Molly Jo likes embarking on both virtual and real-life quests, often exploring new worlds in fantasy gaming or volunteering in foster youth education and animal welfare.

Paige Rice

Director, Research

Paige uses rigorous research methods to uncover what truly drives people—their hopes, motivations, beliefs, and barriers. Partnering with leading foundations, corporations, and trade associations, she explores how people connect with today’s most pressing issues—from generosity and public health to higher education—to help clients translate insights into more effective communications and strategies that reach and resonate with both existing and new audiences.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Feminist Studies and Global & International Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Science in International Development from the University of Amsterdam. Before joining Hattaway, Paige worked in public affairs at SKDK, advising top nonprofits, corporations, and advocacy groups. In her free time, Paige loves cooking vibrant vegetarian meals for friends and family and savoring sunny days in Central Park with a good loaf of bread and cheese.

Carrie Schum

Executive Vice President

Carrie crafts communications that spark change—by weaving audience insights, strategic vision, and creative tactics into campaigns people remember, and act on. A big-picture thinker with deep roots in behavior-change strategy, she’s led work that makes complex topics—from health care to finance—clear, compelling, and actionable.

With degrees in English literature from Swarthmore and the University of Maryland, Carrie shares her knowledge as an advisor at Georgetown University’s master’s program in Integrated Marketing Communication. Before joining Hattaway, she was a partner at Porter Novelli, leading strategic planning, analytics, and research across North America. Carrie is always up for a discussion of books, style, or baking, and is living proof that, in fact, everyone watches women’s sports.

Veronica Selzler

Managing Director, Strategy And Team Development

Veronica clarifies complex communications challenges by listening to what really matters to people, and shaping narratives and strategies that speak to them, not past them. She partners with foundation and coalition leaders who want to shift narratives on big issues from education to generosity to the ocean, and helps them build trust with their audiences and credibility among their peers. 

Veronica earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She finds inspiration in the outdoors, and loves to bring her sketchbook on walks up a mountain or in the neighborhood.

Pete Tontillo

Managing Director, Research

Pete designs innovative research to help organizations understand their audiences’ beliefs and behaviors—and find the best words to inform, inspire, and engage them. He has worked with a wide variety of universities, government institutions, philanthropies, and nonprofits, including Harvard, MIT, the Ford Foundation, and Consumer Reports. 

He graduated from Georgetown University with a master’s degree in linguistics, and from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in classics and African studies. Before Hattaway, Pete worked in Kenya as a Fulbright scholar. He enjoys practicing Chinese with his three-year-old niece, who is already basically better than him.

Maria Fernanda Valenzuela

Junior Associate, Creative

Maria Fernanda transforms complex ideas into clear, eye-catching visuals that help clients connect with their audiences. At Hattaway, she works closely with strategists and researchers to create research reports, message manuals, presentations, and marketing materials that are both visually striking and easy to understand.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in professional graphic design from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) and works fluently in English and Spanish, with basic proficiency in French and Portuguese. She finds creative energy in holistic practices, long hikes, and capturing new perspectives through photography and travel.

Yaxian Xiong

Senior Associate, Research

Yaxian digs deep into what people believe—and why. She designs and conducts mixed-methods research that goes beyond the obvious, turning insights into messages that move hearts and minds. Committed to equity, she partners with nonprofits and foundations to tell stories that spark change and support everyone’s chance to thrive.

Yaxian earned her master’s in Social Research Methods from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s in Marketing from Renmin University of China. A nature-lover and natural problem-solver, you’ll find her hiking new trails or climbing old rocks—always chasing the next challenge.
