Shared Strategies Amplify Impact

When the COVID pandemic struck, public health communicators faced a tough challenge—to translate rapidly evolving science into clear communication that would encourage millions of people to take life-saving actions.

While the challenge was shared, the strategies were not. Communicators worked in silos, using different messages and responding to crisis after crisis, with no time to coordinate or assess their efforts.

To enhance the effectiveness of public health communications at this critical time, the Rockefeller Foundation partnered with Hattaway to create a Communications Community of Practice—a virtual gathering place for communicators to coordinate, collaborate, and learn together.

Hattaway managed the Community of Practice to meet challenges that arose as the pandemic unfolded. Participants learned from rapid message-testing research, shared lessons with each other, and quickly turned insights into action.

More than 950 people from 300 organizations worldwide joined the community, which became a force multiplier for public health communication. They formed powerful working relationships, gained new knowledge and skills, and achieved greater clarity and consistency in communications.
